I spent years trying to hammer D&D into many shaped holes while my players ran around murdering monsters for XP and Gold. Turns out, they were right! Murder hoboing can be fun, and accepting that fact opened my mind into trying different games that accomplished different goals! But most importantly...
Murder Hobo is a loaded term, with a baggage of colonialism and toxicity. But in my games, hobos are underdogs. Pushed outside the boundaries of society to delve into a damp, dark caves, looking for bloodstained treasure just to survive the grinding gears of civilization.
Outcasts, pariahs, mercenaries, adventurers, who both face the monsters that lurk in the dark, and the tax collectors who lay claim to their hard earned gold to fatten the coffers of the local lording.
In a lot of ways I felt like a murder hobo in real life, with no place to sleep, freelancing for a quick buck, broke and on the brink of losing everything the moment my laptop crashed. This is what's MRDR HOBO is. A space where we fight the nightmares that assail us, and the forces that push us from living into surviving.
